“The Law that Leads to Christ: Sincerity and Rest” (Exodus 20:1-17; Romans 9:30-10:4)
Introduction: Learning to recognize Jesus when reading the Ten Commandments
* The purpose of the Law is “to lead us to Christ” (Gal 3:24)
* Jesus is the “goal/end” of the Law (Rom 10:4)
* Jesus is the “fulfillment” of the Law (Matt 5:17)
o The key question when reading the 10 Commandments: How do these help you to know Jesus Christ better?
Third Commandment: “Don’t take up God’s name in vain”
* What does this mean?
o “Taking up/lifting up” God’s name refers to an act of worship/praise
o “In vain” = “insincerely”; praising God with the mouth while the heart is far from Him.
o Jesus in Mark 7
o John 4: God seeks people who worship Him in spirit and in truth
* How does this commandment help us to know Jesus better?
Fourth Commandment: “Remember the Sabbath Day”
* Jesus is the “Lord of the Sabbath” (Mark 2)
* Jesus wants to give us rest (Matt 11:28-30)
